Ever since her mother’s death in 1985, Mary Ellen has been living on the streets. Her only belongings are tightly wrapped in discarded plastic bags to prevent them from getting wet or being chewed on by rodents in the night. Badly in need of a bath and wholesome meal, Mrs. McCord still refused to accept my money—she simply asked that I would provide her a meal and a few moments of my time.
